Rain pounded on the top of the log, awakening Storm. Dew rose beside him. The pair stared lovingly at their sleeping daughter, Star. The joy-filled silence was broken by a desperate cry that was quickly cut off. Dew whipped her head around to face Storm with horrified eyes. Star jumped awake and bristled. Within seconds, they were rushing out of the log in the direction that the noise had come from.
When they came, a horrific site awaited them: a soggy lump of black-and-white fur lay in a river. Immediately, Storm hauled Jinx out of the quick-flowing water.

Only five days after she fell into the water, Jinx began to sneeze frequently. Storm knew that she was quite sick. He gave her lots of comforting licks, and slept with her to keep her warm, but nothing worked. Soon, Jinx refused to eat, even when Dew had brought Jinx her favorite food; salmon. Jinx was getting more and more frail by each passing day.
Jinx was eating now, but even so, she ate very little. Storm gave her food and warmth, but she still remained sick. At times she seemed worse. A claw pierced his heart as he stared down at her delicate body laying limply as she slept.
He was so deep in thought that he hadn't heard Dew come and sit beside him. He felt her fur brush comfortingly along his pelt.
Dew's gaze met his and she murmured,"It's okay. She'll pull through."
