Kittens

Kittens, colored black, white, and grey,
Happy kittens with beaded bellies,
Colors array,
 Loveable little kittens.

Miniature balls of pulled cotton fluff,
Tiny tails,
Little cream puff,
Sweet kittens.

No war or malice,
No, not here,
Not in the kitten palace,
Just joy and happiness.

Dainty little paws,
Wondering eyes,
Needle-like claws,
Sunny smile of pink.

Something hiding in the dark,
Red claws,
Glowing eyes,
Dripping jaws.

Kittens back away,
Fearful of the danger,
As night steals the day.

At mama's side,
Kittens are safe,
From the creature in the dark,
As the sun takes back the sky.

Thief of the Throne-Chapter 3

Obsidian panted as she skidded into the camp of the Cats of the Ice Breath. Her paws left a smeared trail of scarlet blood on the sand as she dashed into the camp, sand greedily pushing its way into the cuts on her pads. She stumbled through the clearing.

Suddenly, three large, muscle-bound cats sprang on top of her. Weakened for her long run and bleeding pads, she tried desperately to get out from underneath them. She knew that she couldn't harm them even if she could because that could cause their leader to say "no" to her question.

"Get...off...please...." Obsidian mustered the energy to feebly meow.

A large gray tom jumped off of her. He exchanged glances with the other tom and a she-cat before meowing, "Why are you in the territory of the Cats of the Ice Breath?"

"And where do you come from?" the black tom added in a questioning tone.

Obsidian weakly lifted her head and began to lick the fresh scratches that crossed over her pelt to hide her fear of the cats. Then she meowed in a shaky voice,"I am Obsidian, a messenger for the Cats of the Majestic Ways. We ask for help from the Cats of the Ice Breath because--"

"We are not going to help you!" The black tom hissed. "Leave!"

"Wait," the sand-colored she-cat meowed. "Let her finish. And as for whether we help her or not, that is for Flare to decide."

"You must help us!" Obsidian cried desperately. "We are under attack! The Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape, the Cats of the Shape-Shifting Figures, and the Cats of the Ways of the Claws are attacking us! Please help us!"

"I will ask Flare, our leader, if we should help you or not," the gray tom meowed. With that, he darted toward a stream and....dived under?

The she-cat must have seen her shocked expression because she laughed, "He'll be fine. There's an entrance way to these tunnels underground where Flare li--"

"STOP! You are giving away to much information, Fleck!" the black tom spat.

"Oh. Sorry."

Obsidian could tell that Fleck was young, just about her age. It seemed unfair to speak to the kind cat so harshly, but Obsidian decided to keep quiet.

A few minutes passed with unease pricking the air when, finally, the gray tom emerged from the water. He hardly looked wet at all. Then he announced, "Flare says that we will help you. Lately we have been scenting that Cats of the Shape-Shifting Figures have been crossing into our territory. It's time we showed them not to mess with us!"

Obsidian felt relief wash over her as the gray tom began to assemble an army. Soon, they were ready to go.

"I can go to the Cats of the Blasting Winds by myself. The Cats of the Majestic Ways needs your help more than me," Obsidian meowed as she saw cats approaching her to escort her the the faraway tribe.

The cats nodded, dipped their heads in farewell, and joined the rest of their tribe mates, led by Flare herself.

*****

Soon, Obsidian found herself bowing in front of Feather, leader of the Cat of the Blasting Winds, explaining her case.

Once she was done explaining the battle, she pleaded, "You must come! The Cats of the Majestic Ways needs you!"

Feather laughed, "Of cause I will. The Cats of the Majestic Ways have always been good friends of the Cats of the Blasting Winds and have always been kind to us. This is our way of saying our thanks."

Obsidian, surprised, was led by Feather and her cats toward the camp of the Cats of the Majestic Ways. They came across a wide road.

Obsidian gasped, "I can't believe that the dark path so large!"

"Yes," Feather agreed grimly. "And this dark path is the last thing that we have to cross to get to your camp."

Feather separated her cats into five groups. Obsidian took a deep breath.

Feather called, "Go!"

Obsidian and four other cats shot across the tarmac. The stone-hard road was hot and sticky and cut her paws with the lose shards hidden among the shadows of the trees beyond. Finally, Obsidian's paws met the cool, soft grass and the sent of green, leaf-laden trees hit the back of her throat. Obsidian skidded to a halt on the dewy grass, letting out her breath in a soft huff.

Obsidian turned back to the wide expanse of foul-smelling darkness along with the other cats of her group. The gap in the road had ended for the moment, halking cars zipping by with terrifying speed.

The minutes ticked by. Obsidian was getting impatient. Her tribe mates were fighting a battle, their every movement determining life and death, victory and loss, while she sat here with a battle patrol watching cars.

After what seemed like an eternity, there was a gap. Patrol after patrol crossed the road in this long-lasting, wide gap. The fourth patrol, Fleck and six others dashed across the path. Finally, it was time for the last group to cross. This group was very small, just Feather and the gray tom that Obsidian had met earlier. They darted into the road. They were half-way finished with the crossing when a noise, a thunderous rumble, started. The sound vibrated through Obsidian's paws and up to her chest.

Blinding, bright white lights lit the brown-gray pelt of Feather. Feather's eyes were wide with fear as she attempted to out run the car. Obsidian couldn't move. She couldn't make a sound. She was frozen with fear.

*****

Feather ran as quickly as she could, the car seeming to case her. Suddenly, she heard a shriek of warning. The call came to late. Feather felt a sharp pain slice through her.  A pain that overwhelmed her. A greedy roar split the air.

Feather's vision blurred. She heard paws pounding the black tarmac. Everything faded away, voices were only as audible as soft waves on a calm lake. She felt life ebbing away.

Scarlet blood dripped the ground like tears. Feather's eyes shut to meet blackness. She gave in and let death claim her.

The Flow of the Day

The stars go down,
the morning sun shines.
Clouds appear in the blue sky.
Birds sing their lovely song.
The day gets warmer as the sun sets beyond the horizon.
Soon the sun disappears,
the moon comes up,
the stars appear into the  night.

Kittens

Tiny, bouncing balls of fur,
Sparkling eyes,
Rumbling purr,
Playful kittens.

Rose-petal pink nose,
Tabby spots lining belly,
In messy little rows.
Cloudy eyes,
Playfully staring up at you.

Buttermilk-colored belly of creamy white,
Mischievous eyes that glitter in the night,
Everlasting energy.

Tiny kitten,
Soft fur,
Little cuties,
Purr, purr, purr.

Tiny triangle ears,
Sweet, twinkling eyes,
No sadness, no tears,
Joy for all kittens.

Tilted head,
Questioning eyes,
Little lap cat,
Time for bed.

Snuggle and sleep,
Stretch and purr,
Kittens rest,
In a heap of fur,
Purr, purr, purr.

Thief of the Throne-Chapter 2

Phantom sighed. "Fire, I have sent messengers and even spies to all of the Tribes of the Majestic Ways. Two tribes, the Cats of the Shape-Shifting Figures and the Cats of the Ways of the Claws, have joined Jag. Our spies have witnessed Jag convincing the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape that a Cat of the Majestic Ways killed Sniper." Phantom's eyes snapped tightly shut and her head bent slightly downward as she thought about the consequences of Jag's thirst for blood and leadership and Sniper's death.

"No!" Fire gasped. "He killed Sniper! And his cats actually believe him?"

Phantom lifted her head and opened her eyes. "If I was found dead and a cat smelled the sent of a Cat of the Tunnels of No Escape on my body, then would you wage war on their tribe?" Phantom questioned.

"Of coarse I would--" Fire cut himself off, realizing that his leader was right.

"What if the cat that had found my body was lying like Jag? It wouldn't be you at fault or the other Cats of the Majestic Ways that were not associated with my assassination. And it would not be the faults of the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape. And that is just how it is here."

*****

Coal peered through the tall grasses, spying on the Cats of the Shape-Shifting Fugues. Her pelt was smeared with mud so that she camouflaged better with the golden grass. It had been pretty boring at their camp. Just the regular stuff. Just as Coal was about to leave and return to her tribe, she overheard an important conversation.

"Mud, I think that it is time." A she-cat leaned towards a molted brown and white tom, the leader of the Cats of the Shape-Shifting Figures.

"Time for what?" Mud asked, a crazy smile spilled crookedly over his face.

"Time for t-the battle." The she-cat looked nervous as she said the words.

"Oh. Oh, yes." Instantly Mud transformed into a snake. "Forward!" he hissed. "To the Cats of the Majestic Ways! To their camp!"

Coal gasped and fled. She skidded into her camp. Already, the warriors and sorceresses and sorcerers were fighting the Cats of the Ways of the Claws and the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape.

Coal called her warning down to the clearing where the cats fought. "The Cats of the Shape-Shifting Figures are coming!"

At that moment, Obsidian stalked forward, panting. Her eyes were narrowed into slits as she walked away form the battle.

"What are you doing?" Coal hissed under her breath.

"I'm getting the Cats of the Ice Breath and the Cats of the Blasting Winds to help us fight," Obsidian replied. The, with a wave of her tail, she disappeared.

Coal looked down at the battle. She swallowed a lump that was rising in her throat. What was happening to the tribes?

Thief of the Throne-Chapter 1

Coal washed her paw nervously. Her ears twitched and her tail tip flicking with anticipation. It had been only yesterday that Obsidian had rushed to her place on that rainy night. The night that Jag had murdered Sniper, leader of the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape....

The morning sun was beginning to wake the world from slumber. Coal exited the tunnels to welcome dawn and the new day. The bright orange-yellow sun peeked above the horizon, cascading a radiant light across the forest.

Stretching, Coal left the entrance of the tunnel. She walked over to the palace to see if she could find Fire, the second in command of the Cats of the Majestic Ways, there.

*****

Meanwhile, in a shady clearing, the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape gathered....

A cat stood in the darkness on a high ledge. His face was darkened by shadows. He began to speak to the cats gathered below him. "Greetings, fellow Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape. I have terrible news to bring to you. Your leader was found, dead, by me. I suspected that a rouge had killed him, but then--"

He was interrupted by meows of grief and sadness. The wails of his fellow cats echoed trough the shadowed clearing.

The cat raised his tail for silence. Though the cat could barley be seen through the darkness, the cats quieted quickly. Then, the cat spoke again, "Sniper's death saddens us all, but we must move on. I will try to be at least half the leader he was, and guide my cats to victory. I scented cat scent on Sniper's body, alright. The scent of a Cat of the Majestic Ways! We must avenge his death!"

"Avenge his death! Avenge his death! Avenge his death!" Angry meows rang through the clearing.

The cat jumped down from the ledge and slunk into the darkness. But for a moment, just a moment, you could see his face from the light of the sun. His pelt was tattered and dark brown. A thin scar was sketched lightly across his ear. His amber eyes glittered with menace. One eye almost unseen beneath two scars. That pelt, those scars, that single blind eye. All of these traits on a cat could only mean one thing. Jag.

"Avenge his death! Avenge his death! Avenge his death!"

*****

Coal meowed, "So no spy duties for me to do today?" She was a spy for the Cats of the Majestic Ways.

"Yes. No spy duties for today. You can help with hunting or delivering messages, though. Both of those jobs require stealth and agility, also," Fire meowed in reply.

"Okay. Thank you for the suggestions, Fire." Coal dipped her head and darted off.

Coal slipped into the shadows of the trees. She parted her jaws and lifted her head, scenting the air for prey. The warm smell of a mouse entered her nose, making her mouth water. She stalked through the undergrowth, following the smell of the small mammal. Soon, she spotted the little brown figure of a mouse, trembling as it nibbled on a seed.

Coal slithered through the cover of the shadows of the trees. Once she was three tail lengths away from the small creature, she lept.

*****

Coal came back to the camp of the Cats of the Majestic Ways, she had two mice and a sparrow dangling from her jaws. Her mother, Star, a hunter, walked up to her, her white tail flicking with pride.

"What wonderful catches, Coal! Oh, I'm so proud of my baby girl!" Star cried cheerfully, her green eyes brimming with happiness.

"Thank you, mother," Coal meowed, smiling.

"Your welcome!" Star replied enthusiastically. "You know where to leave the prey, right?"

"Yes," Coal nodded. "Into Phantoms Chambers and she'll tell me what to do from there."

"Wonderful! Good job!" Star chided happily. Then her mother waved her off with a dip of her muzzle. "Show off your catches and make me proud!"

Coal dashed into Phantom's water-carved palace. A thin blue stream snaked through the entrance of the palace. Coal followed the stream for some time. As she ran, it widened. Soon, it formed a pool. Coal darted onward, past questioning guards, hurrying severs, reporting messengers and spies, and gruff-looking warriors. Then, finally, she skidded to a stop in front of the two guards guarding the wooden doors that led to Phantom's Chamber.

"Why do you dare try to enter Phantom's, Leader of the Cats of the Majestic Ways, Chamber?" a guard asked in a gruff tone.

"I, Coal, a spy for the Cats of the Majestic Ways, have come to give my catches to our leader," Coal meowed back evenly, lifting her head to show her kills.

A guard gave them a sniff. "Fine," she said. "You may enter."

The female guard pushed a lever and the massive wooden doors swung open with a loud clang. Coal tried not to jump before stepping inside of the Chamber.

"Hello, Coal," Phantom meowed, not even opening her eyes. "Bring the mice to the store. Leave the sparrow here."

Coal did as she was told without a word, placing the sparrow down on the smooth stone floor and dashing out of the doorway, past the guards, and into the nearby store where prey was kept until it was eaten. She slid the fresh prey onto the bottom and took a rabbit from the top of the pile (the older prey) for her and her sister to share. Then she darted out of the palace.

As she was walking through the clearing, she saw Obsidian, her sister, washing beside the entrance of their cave.

"Hey! Obsidian!" Coal called, piking up her pace. "Look what I got from the store!"

Obsidian gasped when she saw the prey. "A rabbit! Where did you catch that?"

By now, Coal had set down the catch beside her sister and settled down to eat. "I didn't catch it," she meowed in between bites. "I just saw it on the pile. I know that it's your favorite."

"Thank you!" Obsidian purred quietly, giving Coal her first tiny smile scene that rainy night....

Thief of the Throne-Prologue

Phantom stood poised in an elegant position. The Pool of Flames bubbled and foamed in a mix of water and fire beneath her. Phantom was still as a statue. Suddenly, her eyes snapped tightly shut. Her head was forced downward with the effort until her bright pink nose was nearly touching the flames licking the air below her. Her light gray brow furrowed, her chest unmoving...

******

Muddy water splashed into Obsidian's paws and stung her eyes. She charged through the rain, thunder ringing in her ears and mud caking her paws. She still held a white, waterproof package tightly in her teeth. This had been a message for the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape....

No! Don't think about that! Just run! Run to the palace, run to your sister. Run! Fear rose in her chest and painfully bubbled in her stomach as a horrible memory struck her like a bolt of lighting.

Finally, she skidded to a stop on the sodden, slippery grass in front of a hill. She pushed a stick that was to the side of the small hill. A large, heavy door swung open into a cave and a long, windy series of tunnels. Without hesitation, the small messenger entered the tunnel. It went for some time in the complete dark of a single tunnel. Then it forked into two entrances. Obsidian entered the one on the left. It forked again soon after, this time into three tunnels. This time, the little black and orange cat hesitated.

At this time in the night, she should be in the conference room with Fire. Obsidian thought, darting into the tunnel entrance on the right.

Sure enough, there was another small she-cat and a bulky orange tom in a large space where the tunnel opened into a comfortable room. At the moment, though, Obsidian had something else on her mind.

Obsidian spat the message out onto the smooth earthen floor of the cave. "Coal!" Obsidian meowed, slight edge to her voice. "May I speak to you in private?"

"O-okay..." Coal, Obsidian's sister, sounded confused. "Fire, would you mind so much as to leave for the moment? I believe my sister would like to speak to me. I will meet you back at your place."

"All right. Don't rush yourselves. I'm going to go hunting," Fire, the second in command of the Cats of the Majestic Ways, meowed. Then he bounded away into the darkness.

Obsidian waited until the sound of Fire's pawsteps faded away. Then she whipped around to face her sister, still panting from her long run, her eyes wide. "Coal! Oh, Coal, please tell me that I didn't see it! Please tell me that it didn't happen!"

"What? What happened? What did you see?" Coal said, shifting her paws nervously on the floor of the cave.

"Jag! I was bringing the message to the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape, when I saw Jag k-k-kill Sniper!" Obsidian stammered, wincing as the bloody seen flashed through her mind.

"No! Jag couldn't! He's the second in command! Sniper was the leader... Second in command's are supposed to be trusted!" Coal gasped, the fur on the back of her neck bristling.

"I-I wanted to help him... I did! But, it felt as if my feet w-were stuck to the ground... And Jag, he's stolen the leadership of the Cats of the Tunnels of No Escape! I... I...." Obsidian's mew trailed off.

"No... No... this can't be happening...." Coal was struck with fear, grief, and anger by the terrible news.

******

Phantom lifted her head after some time. She opened her eyes slowly. Her gaze pieced the little black messenger, Obsidian, as she entered the room.

"Phantom, leader of the Cats of the Majestic Ways," Obsidian said formally with great effort to keep her meow even.

At that moment, Phantoms eyes fully opened and her head fully rose. "The Tribes of the majestic Ways will meet great tragedy at the loss of a single cat, with many others following its fate...."
