Cosmo, the Cupid of Love

With bowstring drawn back,
With arrow strong and still,
With hand grasped on bow, stiff and ready.

With eyes trained on target,
With time chose with care,
With seconds ticking by,
Before arrow is in flight.

Arrow strikes target, accurate and sure,
Weeping rain stops,
Sun warms Earth,
And love fills the air.

Arrow struck target,
Never to be doubted,
Once held by bow,
Once held by cupid.

To always be remembered,
To always be cherished,
He is the blossom of life,
Cosmo, the cupid of love.

Fallen Stars 11-A Stunning Surprise

Sunset yawned and blinked her eyes open against the golden glow of the sunlight. She stood up and stretched, her back arched and her ears flattened against her head. When she was done, she lifted her head and glanced around the den, a fallen oak that Sunset, Blaze, Crow and the new cat, Ivory slept in.

Sunset saw that only Crow wasn't in the den. Blaze's jaw was slightly parted in a soft snore. Ivory's chest rose and fell rhythmically. His back was facing Sunset, and his face was turned away, his head was curled to his chest and his ears where angled toward the wall of the den. Sunset turned away from the two toms and looked at the entrance of the log. Decaying bark that was half peeled away lined the shear-shaped exit. Sunset pushed herself onto her feet. Blinking, she realized that, absent-minded of it, she had sat down. As she walked out of the log, she felt exhausted, like she needed more sleep, even though she had slept later than usual.

Sunset stepped into the morning light. The sun cast a warm, radiant yellow light over the gray stones the formed the cave where Sunset lived. As Sunset looked up at the cloudless sky, the sun seemed to smile down at her.

There was also something eerie about this morning. Long, dark shadows seemed to hide behind the bushes and trees. Below her, in a valley, everything was at a standstill. It was as if the whole world was holding it's breath, waiting for something to happen...

Sunset pushed the thought away. Why would anything happen? Why here? Why would she eve think that? But still....

*******

After a successful hunt with Blaze, Sunset dragged herself to Lavender and her family's den, half-asleep. Lavender lifted her head as Sunset entered the cave.

"Hello, Sunset. You look tired. Are you feeling all right?" Lavender asked, sounding concerned.

"Hi, Lavender. Yeah, I am a little tired. I'm fine, though. How are you?" Sunset meowed drowsily, sitting down.

Lavender nowowed her eyes and slowly looked Sunset up and down. Than again. Although she still seemed unsatisfied, as if she did not believe her sister's word, she finally said, "I'm fine. Canary is getting be a wonderful hunter. She needs to work on her fighting skills, but I think that she will fit just fine in our little group. Stone and I are very proud. So, I am fine. You?"

"I'm great," Sunset purred, butting her head against her sister's.

A voice called from outside the den, "Hey! Sunset! Were are you? We have to check the boarder! Where are you?"

Sunset sighed, "That's Crow. I'm sorry, Lavender. I have to go now. Goodbye."

"Goodbye, Sunset. I had a good time talking to you," Lavender meowed as Sunset got up.

"Me too," Sunset meowed over her shoulder.

When she pushed herself out of the den, Crow was readily waiting for her, tail lashing. She fallowed him out of the clearing. They walked in silence until Crow spotted something. Sunset ran towards him when she heard him meow for her.

"What is it, Crow? Why did you call m--" Sunset started. That is when she saw the paw print. A fresh paw print. And the black and orange fur caught in the brambles. She gasped, shocked. "Who made that pint? Why is there fur in that bush? Crow, what is going on?"

"I certainly didn't do it. We-we must tell Blaze," Crow meowed, seeming as surprised as she was.

The two stared at the paw print for awhile until they finally darted into the trees toward the cave.

Kitty Tips-Collars and I.D. Tags

This 'Kitty Tips' is going to be all about collars, I.D. tags, lashes, catios, and microchips! These are all things that can help prevent your cat from getting lost. Having multiple or even all of these things is safest. Although, just one may save your cat's life.

First I'll talk about collars. Collars are wonderful to have for your cat, but they aren't very helpful when your cat gets lost if they don't have a small bell or an I.D. tag. A cat's I.D. tag is a rabies license. An I.D. tag on a lost cat's collar tells the person that finds the cat that this kitty is some one's pet.

Collars have to be a certain length away from a cat's neck. To be sure that your cat's collar is the perfect distance away from his or her neck, put two of your fingers, you pointer finger and your middle finger, together. Slip them between your cat's neck and collar. Can your fingers fit snugly in the space? If they can't, then adjust the collar and repeat the previous steps. Continue doing this until the collar is the perfect length away from your cat's neck. This is important to do because if the collar is too tight, than you cat will suffocate. If the collar is too lose, then your cat's collar could get snagged on something and your cat could hang itself.

Another collar safety check is to make sure that your cat's collar is breakable. If a non-breakable collar gets caught on something, the cat's life could be in danger. Buy a breakable collar for your cat's safety. Petco®, a pet store, is one of the places that sells breakable cat collars. Here are some links to a few of the breakable collars that they sell: http://www.petco.com/product/110849/Coastal-Pet-Safe-Cat-Reflective-Breakaway-Collar-in-Pink-Circle-Print.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch
http://www.petco.com/product/110851/Coastal-Pet-Safe-Cat-Reflective-Breakaway-Collar-in-Pink-Daisy-Print.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch
http://www.petco.com/product/117061/Petco-Nylon-Adjustable-Urban-Plaid-Cat-Collar-in-Pink-and-Black.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

A different safe cat collar that Petco® sells is the reflective nylon collar. This collar reflects light and shines. This way, people diving at night will be able to see you cat better. Here are links to two of these collars: http://www.petco.com/product/111003/Coastal-Pet-Lil-Pals-Lavender-Reflective-Kitten-Collar-with-Bell.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

Bells are good to have on your kitty's collar. You will be alerted that your furry friend is close to an open door. They are also a sign to people that your cat has a owner if she or e does get out of the house.

Leashes are also very good and handy things that you can attach to your cat's collar. It is best to train your cat when your cat is a kitten or when it is still under one years old, but an adult or mature adult cat can still be trained to be led on a leash. They just won't have as high of a tolerance for it as a younger cat would.

Another thing that will help your cat be brought safely back home to you if he or she is lost is the microchip. Microchips are special, tiny chips of metal that can get inserted into your cat's skin. If your cat gets lost, then someone may find him or her. When they do, they might take her to the local vet clinic for a short checkup. The vets at the vet clinic will probably check the cat for a microchip. If the kitty has one, then your cat can be safely taken back home to you.

Catios are large, wire-enclosed, weather-proof space. A catio is a safe place for your kitty to get some fresh air. Your cat can watch birds and squirrels from a perch inside of the catio without anyone getting hurt. A tunnel leads from the house to the catio. There are wooden planks that your cat can jump onto inside of the catio. You can put cat trees and wooden poles for your cat to climb and scratch. Climbing, playing, stalking, pouncing and jumping in their catios keeps a house cat stimulated and active. A catio is also a wonderful place for your cat to happily sleep in the sunlight without a worry in the world.

I hope that readers use one of these things for the safety of their kitties. And i also hope that whether your cat has a catio or a collar, a leash or a microchip, it will always be cherished by the person it loves.

Long Shadows 7#

Alexia was still gaping at the large cave while Chestnut and Puff sniffed around the cave entrance. A cold breeze swept Alexia back into reality. She scooped Puff into her arms and began to step into the Cave of Fading Echos. Then, she stopped herself. She turned around and grabbed the two sacks, both filled with important supplies, and set them on the green, grass-covered ground. She opened up the bag that contained the food and water. She decided that they had enough to last for the quest. Then, Alexia realized that this mission could last for months. But, there weren't any stores close to the cave and she wanted to save the rest of her money for the journey home.

Alexia heard her stomach growl. She looked at Chestnut, who was prancing beside the bags and pawing at the ground with her jet-black hooves. "All right, all right," Alexia laughed. "We'll stop to eat. It has to be quick though. We need to get home in as little time as possible."

Then, Alexia dished out the food. She gave Chestnut a carrot. Then, she gave herself three crackers, a piece of cheese and a few gapes. She had finished the cheese and grapes when she noticed a steam hidden behind a few large boulders. Alexia ran over to the stream, the crackers sill clutched in her fist, and knelt down beside the water. She set the crackers on the grass, cupped her hands together and scooped up some water. Once she her dank her fill, she waited for Chestnut to finish drinking while she ate her crackers.

When the two where done, Alexia leaded the way back to the cave entrance. It was late in the evening now, but she was determined to carry on. The little group than entered the Cave of Fading Echos.

Fallen Stars 10-A Time of Harmony

Sunset walked into the clearing with a vole, a sparrow and a mouse clamped in her jaws. She placed the prey in the small pit where the cats that lived here, Blaze, Crow, Stone, Lavender, Canary and herself, kept prey before it was time to eat. Stone dropped his catches, three mice and a pigeon, into the pile also.

Sunset looked at the large patch of boulders that sat at the entrance of the clearing. "I hope that Blaze and Crow will be back soon. They should be finished marking the border by now," she meowed, worried.

"Well, they left just before us. Marking the border can take a while," Stone pointed out. "I know that you are afraid that there are more foxes out and about, but I'm sure that there are none."

Ever sense Sunset had heard a sound in some bushes, she had thought that there were foxes living on their territory. "Okay. Thank you for the reassurance." Sunset said.

Stone dipped his head and, smiling, walked over to the cave where his mate and kit lived with him. Sunset watched him disappear into the shadowy den. Then, she stalked over to the boulders. She climbed up a steep, rock-laden hill. Once she was nearly at the top, she stopped. Sunset slid into a large boulder that was cracked down the middle. There she sat, surveying the forest stretched below her. She loved this place. She thought up here where it was quiet and she was alone.

Now, Sunset thought about the strange stars. The stars that morphed into kittens. She wondered what that meant. Was it even a sign or was it just a vision that coincidentally happened to have the same number of kittens as there had been falling stars? Sunset wished that she could tell someone about the sign, but who would she tell? Blaze? No, he would be to frantic and worried to give it a thought. Crow? No, he wouldn't understand her dilemma. Lavender? Yes! That's who! Her sister!

Sunset shot down the hill. Dodging the rocks that peppered the hillside, she thought, I hope that Lavender will understand the sign.

When Sunset was finally standing in front of the cave that Lavender, Stone and Canary lived in, she peered inside of the den and meowed, "Lavender? It's Sunset. May I have a word with you?"

"Sunset? Hello! Certainly you can! What is it that you wish to talk to me about?" Lavender purred, swishing her tail over the fern and moss bed, indicating to Sunset to sit down.

"Well," Sunset meowed, settling down in the nest and taking a deep breath. "Last night, I was looking at the stars washing earth in their radiant silver glow. Suddenly, five shooting stars fell across the sky. As I looked at them, an image came into my head. The stars turned kittens. One was a white she-cat with blue eyes. Two were brown tabbies. One was a black she-cat. And one was a gray tom. I opened my eyes and the stars were gone along with the kittens. I do not know what this means or if it even means anything. I wanted to be able to share this with you and ask you what your opinion is on it. So, what do you think this whole thing means?"

Lavender blinked, taking in all of this new information. "I think," she meowed thoughtfully. "I think that this image of the kittens does mean something. I don't know what, of course. But, I can guess. My guess is that these little kittens will somehow play a role in your life. I can't say that this is the truth and that it will happen, but that is what I make of this."

Sunset dipped her head in thanks. "Goodbye, Lavender!" she called over her shoulder as she left the cave.

"Goodbye!" Sunset heard her sister's voice call behind her.

As Sunset walked over to the prey pile, she saw that Crow and Blaze had arrived. Sunset looked them up and down. They looked very tired but, there was no sign that they had engaged in a fight with a fox.

Just to be sure, Sunset asked, "Any trouble at the boarder?"

"Yes--no! What does it look like? Do you think that if we saw some dogs heading towards the cave that we would hang around the clearing and wait for you to ask us? Do you?" without giving her time to answer he continued, "I can't believe that anyone would do that! I can't believe that anyone wound think that! But you do!" And with that, Crow stomped off.

"No. There was nothing there," Blaze meowed. And playfully purring he added, "Don't mind Crow. There's always trouble with him!"

Sunset smiled and lightly cuffed her friend on the ear. Then, the pair shared a rabbit together, in a time of peace and harmony. Although, this peace and harmony would not last.

"Meow!" Cats Speak Out 5#

Ice sat on the cold pavement. Tears turned the soft white fluff on his cheek fur to untidy damp clumps. He watched as the rest of his owner's car turned into nothing but a small blue speck in the distance and then finally, diapered beyond the horizon. Ice fought the urge to chase after it some more. He had been running for what seemed like hours, trying to catch up to the car and show his humans that they had accidentally forgotten him. Although, something inside of him told him that them leaving him all alone was no accident.

Ice's paws stung as he got up. He looked down and lifted his paw to his face. It was cut and bloody from running on the hard road chasing after his humans. His humans....Fresh tears filled his eyes and ran down his cheeks. His humans. How could they have done this to him? Ice sat down, trying to stop the throbbing pain in his paws.

Images flashed trough his mind. His owners talking and looking at houses on the computer as he sat on their laps, purring. His owners putting up a large white sign in their yard as he wove through their legs. His owners sitting down and talking with a man as he licked their fingers. His owners loading up a big white van as he played with a lose string on the man's pant leg. And, finally, his humans stepping into the car as he desperately tried to get in with them.

Ice tightly shut his eyes, trying to escape the pain. Then, a horrible thought struck him. His owners hadn't been paying much attention to him before they left him. What if they didn't care? What if they wouldn't come back and cuddle him and tell him that they were sorry and that they missed him? What if--what if he was all alone forever? Did he have any friends in this cruel world? He knew the answer to the last question. No. He was alone. Alone forever.

Cats

Cats are amazing animals. They fascinate people worldwide with their breathtaking beauty. The domestic cat has found its way into the hearts of many humans. Many people wish to know how cats land on all four paws or how cats see so well in the dark. This post will answer many questions about cats.

The cat anatomy is very interesting. A cat's spine has many vertebra. This helps a cat turn to lick the base of its tail or even land on all four of its paws. When a cat falls, it twists around in midair so that its paws are all pointing downward. Now, the cat arches its back. This helps it parachute down to the ground. While the cat can still get badly injured when they fall, the wounds are almost never fatal. Sometimes, the longer the fall the better. When a fall is from the highest window of a 50 story building, the cat has a harder fall then if it fell from the top of a 70 story building. This is because the cat has more time to parachute to the ground.

Cats have a wonderful sense of smell. In fact, cats have twice as many smell-sensitive cells in their noses as humans do. This is a great advantage for them when they are hunting. Cats can tell if the animal they're hunting is a mouse or a vole just by its scent. Cats have an organ called Jacobson's organ that helps them smell and taste.

Cats also are grate at hearing. A cat's ear can hear even the slightest sound like the heart of a mouse pumping. A cat's ears are positioned on the top of its head. They are large and have many musculus inside of them. These musculus rotate the ear to funnel in sounds from any direction. The shape of a cat's ear helps in the process. The sound waves that the ear catches then passes down the ear canal. The ear canal is like a tube that starts at the ear and end at the eardrum. Then, in the middle ear, three bones called the ossicles transfer the vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear, or cochlea, and auditory nerve. A cat's cochlea is located deeper inside of the head. It is snail-shaped and small. Then the sound waves are sent to the brain. This is how a cat hears.

A cat's eyesight is amazing. Cats can see in one sixth of the light that humans need to see in. Cats also have more rods (things in cat and human eyes that help them see in the darkness) than cones (things in the eyes of both cats and people too that help them see in light). Cat's eyes also have a wider angle of vision than people.

A clear cornea covers a cat's fluid-filled chamber called the anterior chamber. Behind the anterior chamber is the three-part uvea. This includes the iris, a lens, flanked by the ciliary bodies. Behind the lens is another fluid-filled chamber lager than the anterior chamber called the posterior chamber. The retina lines the back of the posterior chamber. The retina "reads" the light and passes this information to the optic nerve. The optic nerve then sends the information to the cat's brain which than flips the upside down image so that it is right side up.

So, that is a bit about the anatomy of a cat. I hope that, for many years to come, people continue to love and care for these fantastic felines.

The Cove Of Eternal Darkness 2#

IceWhisper awoke bathed in sunlight. Her burns stung. She looked around the cave. Only Fang was still asleep. She looked outside of the den. BlackMagic was sitting on the far side of the yard-long clearing in front of the small cave, washing her front paws.

"Hello, BlackMagic!" IceWhisper called as she walked out of the cave. "How are you?"

"Oh, hi, IceWhisper," BlackMagic meowed. "I am well. How are you?"

"Good," IceWhisper replied. "Do you know where FairyFlame and RockFlight are?"

"They went off to hunt. They should be back soon, though. Why do you ask?"

IceWhisper shrugged. "I just wanted to know."

"Anyway, is Fang awake yet?" BlackMagic meowed softly, peering over IceWhisper's shoulder to see.

"No. He was tossing and turning all night. I think that he's upset about the dragon tribe winning territory from us," IceWhisper said.

BlackMagic nodded her head in agreement. "Oh, look! The hunting party has returned!" she exclaimed.

Then, the pair of she-cats hurried off to greet FairyFlame and RockFlight. But, the two cats had brought only one mouse and where covered in blood.

BlackMagic blinked in surprise. "What happened?"

"The--dragons--attacked--Kai wants--more land!" FairyFlame gasped. The poor cat looked like she was about to collapse.

"Come. Let's go to the Garden. Your wounds need to be treated," BlackMagic meowed, gently nudging to two wounded cats toward the Garden.

"I must speak to Fang and tell him what happened!" IceWhisper meowed urgently.

"Okay. I'll treat the wounds," BlackMagic agreed as she walked off. "Goodbye!"

IceWhisper headed for the cave. "Goodbye!" she called over her shoulder.

FairyFlame and RockFlight flicked their tails in farewell and followed BlackMagic, diapering into the undergrowth. IceWhisper felt the cold stone under her paws. She wondered how Fang would handle this. He was already so stressed....

IceWhisper let out a heavy sigh. She pulled herself together and sat down beside Fang. He was still in a deep slumber. IceWhisper nudged his silver flank. "Fang. Fang," she whispered softly. "Fang, wake up."

After awhile of this, Fang rolled over and muttered, "Huh...?"

"Fang!" IceWhisper exclaimed joyfully.

Fang jumped up on his feet in surprise. "IceWhisper? What is it?"

"Kai attacked FairyFlame and RockFlight while they were hunting close to the new boarder. BlackMagic took them to the Garden to treat their wounds. What should we do, Fang?" IceWhisper meowed.

I do not know," Fang whispered, looking shocked. Then, he shook his head and meowed, "Go help BlackMagic treat the wounded. I will be here if their is any trouble. Also, when you and BlackMagic are finished treating FairyFlame and RockFlight, go and hunt. We need prey. I'm sure that the pair didn't bring back much."

"Okay. We will. Goodbye, Fang," IceWhisper said as she disappeared into the shadows.

******

BlackMagic and IceWhisper emerged from the bushes, prey in their mouths. Fang greeted them.

"Hello! Put your prey in the pile with the mouse. I must talk to you two when you are finished," Fang meowed. Then, he sprinted into the log, avoiding any more conversation.

IceWhisper followed BlackMagic to the pile of prey. They placed down their catches and, without another word, they dashed into the log after Fang. FairyFlame and RockFlight were already there. Fang jumped on top of a small, flat stone. He used this rock to announce things to the tribe. His face was hard and serious. IceWhisper shifted uncomfortably.

"Good, your all here. I have an important thing to talk about with you. The dragon tribe is acting very aggressive. They are just asking for trouble with us," Fang meowed stiffly.

"Wait! Are you saying that we are going to attack the dragon tribe?" FairyFlame called up from the crowd. Her voice crackled with tension.

"Yes. We are going to go to war with the dragon tribe."

Dear Diary 10#

Hello!

Yesterday, I found a tortoiseshell cat eating the food. A saw that her eye was infected and I decided to take the chance and go out to see her. The cat was very friendly, so she was easy to catch. I brought her into the vet clinic today. They gave me medication for her eye after an examination. They also told me that she might be pregnant. This incessant makes me think about how many owners don't spay their pets. Just a few days ago, on February 28, was Spay Day. I feel angry that the owners of many cats ignore this. I think that it is an owner's responsibility to keep their cat safe, happy and comfortable. When owner's don't live up to the responsibility of caring for their cat, the cat's life could be put in danger. Remember, your cat counts on you to care for it. Do not neglect your little friend.

When I brought the new cat home, I put her in a confined space. This way she doesn't spread parasites or sicknesses. I advise pet owners to do this when they get a new cat. This way your other pets will get to know the new cats scents and sounds. After a week or two, your new friend will be ready to leave to confined room. Your other pets will already know the way he or she smells and sounds. This will usually cause them to not fight the new cat.

A picture of Cyclone, a cat character that I made up (you can also view this picture along with many others on the side of our blog):
