Vegetarianism in India

In India, many people are vegetarian. This was partly because cows are believed to be sacred. Buddhism and Jainism preach ahimsa, or non-violence and this is also a reason why a majority of the people in India are vegetarians. As a fellow vegetarian, I found this interesting.

What might a person from India have for breakfast? Well, she or he might have a bowl of pongal, a creamy, rice-based dish cooked with nuts and spices. Or maybe some sliced mango, which is native to India. Possibly some uttapam, a large, almost pancake like patty made from fermented rice and lentils and sprinkled with vegetables and spices as a topping.

With their breakfast, they might have a cup of tea or coffee. Coffee, though, is more popular in the lower part of India and tea is more popular in the uppermost section.

For lunch and dinner, an Indian might have some naan, a flat, soft, white bread sometimes flavored with garlic. Or aloo parata, a pan fried layered whole wheat bread stuffed with potatoes and spices. Onion kulcha, an onion mixed bread, might also be on the menu.

Some other lunchtime dishes include bainigan bartha, eggplant baked with mashed tomatoes and onions; palak paneer, spinach and cottage cheese with tomatoes and spices; and aloo gobi, potatoes and cauliflower cooked with spices.

With so many delicious vegetarian dishes available, it is no wonder that there are still 300 million people in India that are vegetarian.

“What is the good way? It is the path that reflects on how it may avoid killing any living creature. Refrain from taking precious life from any living being, even to save your own life.”

(All of the dishes mentioned in this paper are meatless--vegetarian.)
