Dotts: Chapter Three: The Thief

Kat yawned wildly and shoved the grubby blanket off of her shoulders. She rubbed her eyes vigorously, attempting to reawaken her senses. Kat stumbled around the room for a bit before she found what she wanted: her walkie talkie. She fumbled for the power switch for a few moments, still enveloped in a fog of sleep.

When Kat had finally turned it on, she muttered wearily into it, “This is Sargent Kat, Corporal Kaycee are you there?”

“I’m hear,” came the more awake reply of her friend. “What is it that you want, Kat?”

“My--my alternating guard... he’s gone missing. Didn’t show up for his shift. I’m afraid that something must have happened to him...” Kat trailed off, attempting to keep the panic out of her voice. Her sharp brown eyes scanned the room, but there were no signs of any struggle or, for that matter, a break-in.

Kaycee laughed. “Oh, come on! Do you always have to assume the worst? He skimped out on his shift, slept in, the slacking lump of snot.”

“Oh,” Kat said in reply, both relief and humiliation washing over her. Then she added fretfully, “Do you think that this isn’t the first time he’s...?”

“Oh, Kat,” Kaycee sighed in exasperation. Did you hear what I just said to you? Ah, whatever. You could be right, but it won’t happen again. The idiot got kicked off the force. Problem is that we can’t get him to live somewhere else or hire a new guard because we’re isolated from the world right now.” This was followed by another sigh.

Kat couldn’t help but feel bad for the guard. She had, after all, fallen asleep on the job that very night. Not for her entire shift, but still. “What he gonna do now?” she ventured uncertainly.

“I dunno,” Kaycee replied indifferently. “But who cares? We could have all been murdered in our beds, thanks to him.”

“Huh,” Kat said shakily, trying but failing to keep the fear out of her voice.

“Heh. Who was the dummy who gave you a higher ranking then me, you little cowered,” Kaycee teased.

Kat began to reply, fuming, when she was interrupted by a click from the other line.

Sighing heavily in exasperation, Kat plunked back down onto the creaky old couch. She wondered when her friend would call her next. She began to rack her brain for a proper comeback, although she had never been as good as Kaycee at teasing....

This call soon came, abut, poor unfortunate Kat had not found anything good enough to use yet.

“You... You are bigheaded and have--” Kat began, attempting to make something up on the spot.

“This is no time for insults!” Kaycee gasped, out of breath. “I... I just got my save robbed!”

At first, the blood rushing in her ears was to distracting for Kat to be able to reply back. Her head was swimming. How could this have happened? Kat dicided to voice her questions to Kaycee. “What happened? How do you know? Have you told Sanders yet? Where you able to see the person who robbed you? What did the thief look like? Did the person take everth--” Kat was cut off by her friend.

“Okay, okay, I’ll answer your questions! Just shut up already!” Kaycee raged, obviously, even in her state of shock, highly annoyed.

“I’m sorry,” Kat said timidly.

“No, I’m the one who should be apologizing,” Kaycee said whole-heartedly, evidently calmed down.

This was followed by a long and uncomfortable silence before Kaycee decided to bake the ice. “So, about your questions,” she began. “The thief was a girl. She was clad in black pants and a black tank-top, complete with black boots and a sword belt. She also had a single gold earring, a ton of freckles, violet fingerless gloves that went over her elbows, a silver broken-heart locket and bushy red hair in tight curls, tied back in a pony tail. But she also had what appeared to be a long black tail, which kept on twitching, almost as if it were... were real. She also had ‘claws’ and black cat ears.

“She shot my gun out of my hands and took all of the stuff in the vault, but them into a brown bag, and slung it over her shoulder. She then slipped through the bares of the window that she had broken coming in, laughing, and was gone.”

Kat shuddered. Who was this thief? “She must be the one who hacked into our channels...”

“Yeah. Y’know, I’ve gotta report this the the major. I’m sorry but--you understand, don’t you, Kat?” Kaycee said awkwardly.

“Yeah, of course I do,” Kat assured her friend with an understanding smile that she couldn’t see. “In fact, I pity you. Having to face Sanders with this information... Oh, he’s not gonna like this at all.” Kat shook her head, tutting with empathy.

“Well,” Kaycee ventured with mock hope, “you could always take my place in calling him...”

“Oh, uh, no,” Kat began hastily. “I have to to some...stuff and--”

“Huh, some friend you are. Over ‘n’ out,” Kaycee said with good humor.

“Good luck, Kaycee,” Kat said. “Over.”

At that, the pair both turned off their walkie talkies, each wondering what fate was to befall poor Kaycee under Sanders’s wrath.

“So after he yelled his head off at me, he told me that he would fire me if he could. But, y’know, he’s already got ‘one man down’ and can’t get anyone to replace me, so he can’t. I dread the day when we get back online,” Kaycee informed her friend, sounding exhausted. Then she added, “Poor ol’ Sanders is a bit confused. He says that we should just sit tight and not try to do anything to rash. Dummy’s gonna have us sitting here like a team o’ sitting ducks.”

“Dear god, you sound like you had a good day,” Kat laughed sarcastically, suppressing a smile. “So what happened after that?”

“Well, Sanders was all like ‘over and out’ and that was the end of the conversation. Then I called you,” Kaycee explained.

Kat was left confused and at a loss for words. Then Kat broke her confused silence and inquired suspiciously, “Then how come it’s been over two hours sense you last called me?”

Kaycee laughed. “Nothing escaped the observant eyes of the Sargent, does it? I salute you, solder. He yelled at me for over two hours, that’s why. My ears are still ringing...” Kaycee trailed off weakly.

“Ha ha, point taken,” Kat said. “Signing off.”

Kat pressed the power switch to turn her HHRD off, and it obliged.

“Wow, I’ve really been on and off with this thing today, haven’t I?” Kat murmured to herself, gazing wistfully into space as she clipped it onto her belt.

Kat recalled the news that Kaycee had given her. It disturbed her that the Major clearly believed that this would be the only attack. Why would the thief knock out the channels if she only wanted to attack once? No, there was bound to be another attack. Kat knew that it was best to be on guard and not underestimate her enemy. That would defiantly not be wise.

Sighing wearily, Kat plunked down onto the creaky red couch, which squeaked in distress underneath her.
